Completed the ingleborough marathon today. Just wanted to say thank you to all the marshals who, despite the wind and driving rain, were so friendly and encouraging. Well organised event over a gorgeous route- thank you!!!

    From Otley Athletic Club:

Saturday 11th May – Cave Rescue Organisation Clapham Circuit 12 Mile Challenge

    Report from Liz Fawcett:

    ! NEWS FLASH !

Three members of OAC on the podium!!

Laura Martin overall first with 2hrs 04mins

Caron Ralph and Liz Fawcett in joint second 2hrs 25mins

I think we ran well but it was a small field! Most of the runners at the “mass start” were running the Ingleton Marathon (including Nick Hodgkinson but sorry, not sure how he got on, although he was very excited about the possibility of finishing in the top 20).

The first third of the race was a mainly steady ascent from Clapham on farm tracks up onto the limestone pavement east of Ingleborough. There were some rocky clints and grykes to negotiate across the plateau then ran a lovely grassy descent into the beautiful countryside around Austwick.

It was mainly good tracks underfoot so you could appreciate the impressive lime stone escarpments.

Sadly the weather wasn’t great with a cloudy start which turned into drizzle then persistent light rain but it was a grand day out in the Dales. Not too far to travel, plenty of helpful friendly marshalls and signs at strategic points although navigation skills are required particularly to map out the route in the first place, let alone on the hills.

I would encourage club members to have a go next year and support a worthy cause, you are certainly in safe hands. There are no time pressures as it is a walking event also. I’ll certainly be putting 10th May 2014 in my diary!

Thanks for organising and marshalling the event in such atrocious weather.
Despite retiring from the marathon after 13 miles I would be keen to try again next year. it was cold enough running, goodness knows how the marshalls kept warm. And thanks for the lift from the pub back to Clapham and the wonderful shower! Are there any results available, just out of interest?
